Lithium battery overheating is one of the main causes of fires today. The use of electric bicycles and scooters is increasing, especially among younger populations. The clear advantages of electric transportation include convenience, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, along with these benefits, there are potential dangers in the battery charging process. Excessive heating of batteries can lead to technical malfunctions, fires, and environmental damage.
According to firefighting and rescue data, around 150 apartments are burned on average each year due to charging electric bicycles or scooters. Most of these fires occur in residential buildings during battery charging. In addition to the primary human hazards posed by these fires, there are also economic aspects. Property damage from a fire can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of shekels for a family, and the economic damage from fires amounts to many millions.
The main causes of lithium battery failures are overcharging and charging the battery while it is still hot after prolonged use. As part of the project, the advanced electronic card which was developed allows detection of lithium battery overheating in portable devices, including electric bicycles and scooters. The electronic card consists of two parts: the first is placed on the battery and its role is to identify overheating, while the second part is placed on the socket, enabling real-time monitoring of critical processes in battery charging and stopping the charging by cutting off the current.
Users of the card can identify and address potential risks associated with excessive heating early on. The card allows precise monitoring of battery temperature in real time and provides warnings and alerts if the temperature exceeds predefined values. Additionally, the card enables control over the correct charging current and immediate interruption of the current in case of overheating.
With the help of this electronic card, users can improve battery performance and prolong its lifespan, prevent excessive battery heating, and reduce the risk of malfunctions or damage during charging.
