Using Jetson Nano, this pigeon-deterrent system detects pigeons via a webcam, controlling servo motors and a laser pointer.
Birds (pigeons in particular) can cause a lot of harm and distress to all kinds of property.
This project is designed and built as the base of a product that can harmlessly and
humanely remove the birds from the property. The device incorporates a Logitech
webcam for the scan and detection of the bird, Two SG90 Micro-Servo motors for the
camera’s movement and a laser diode for the marking of the detected bird. The laser is
integrated as an alternative for future water jet system that will drive the bird away, as
we decided to focus on the image detection. The integration between all the hardware
and the software happens on Nvidia’s Jetson Nano device in a python environment. The
Servo motors are fixated using pre-made device on which the camera sits, in addition to
a home-made wooden box for the device to be held upon with screws.
The device’s operation includes an initialization at the start of a run, a regular scan in
order to search for the birds and (when a detection occurs) a tracking mode which
allows a continuous detection of the pigeon until its departure.
