The vision of smart home is an old idea. Back in the sixties there was talk of a house to automatically be able to perform autonomous actions.
Until recently the technology was possible but very expensive.
After the breakout of the Internet, smart phones, and smart little cheap embedded systems; this dream became cheaper.
